Dossier Disasters....
1. Marginal cases are almost always poor. This is most apparent when one reads a good case, and then the difference is quite apparent.
2. We still don't know how it happens that long-time associate professors then lay golden eggs.
3. There are schools whose dossiers are much more reliable than others, and this seems to be always the case.
4. There are schools whose dossiers are much less reliable than others, and this seems to be always the case.
5. Bait and switch. We are told that we have to appoint X if Y is to come, and then Y does not come. X is often marginal.
6. Excuses for weak performance are almost always lacking in credibility. The excuses weaken the case.
7. Assistant professors should never edit a book, they should write another one.
8. Comparisons are only credible when the field is considered widely.
